International Animal Rescue (IAR) has released its IARconserves Programme Impact Report on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, just ahead of World Earth Day on April 22nd. The report showcases the success and impact of the organization’s holistic conservation program, IARconserves, in promoting the protection of nature and the environment.
The report highlights the incredible work of IAR in rescuing and rehabilitating animals, protecting habitats, and empowering communities. One of the most heartwarming stories featured in the report is that of Budi, an orangutan who was rescued from a chicken coop and rehabilitated for eight years before being released back into the wild. This story gained widespread attention on social media and captured the hearts of many.
Another remarkable achievement of IAR is the formation of the first-ever 96-strong female firefighting team in Borneo, named “The Incredible Power of Mama.” These women have not only been instrumental in fighting forest fires but have also challenged gender norms and inspired change in their communities.
The report also highlights the impact of IAR’s conservation efforts in empowering communities living on the forest edge in Borneo. Through their collaboration and initiatives, IAR has protected over 300,000 hectares of forest, preventing the release of 70 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
Gavin Bruce, CEO of International Animal Rescue and its IARconserves Programme, expressed his pride in the organization’s achievements and emphasized the importance of their holistic approach to conservation. He stated, “As we reflect on the impact of our conservation efforts, it’s evident that our holistic approach is making a substantial difference. International Animal Rescue is achieving tangible and sustainable results through dedicated collaboration with communities and rigorous implementation of tailored initiatives. Let us continue to amplify our impact and forge a brighter future for people, wildlife, and the environment.”
Dr. Karmele Llano Sanchez, Programme Director of YIARI, which is IAR’s implementation partner for IARconserves in Indonesia, also shared her thoughts on the impact of the program. She praised the journey of “The Power of Mama” as an example of the transformative power of grassroots initiatives in wildlife conservation. She also commended the women for their dedication and commitment to safeguarding forests and building resilient communities.
