The city of Carlisle and its surrounding rural areas are set to be the focus of a major report, which will be published later this year. Commissioned by Cumbria Community Foundation, the report titled “Carlisle: Opportunities and Challenges” will analyze the social needs and community issues of the city, highlighting existing initiatives to address disadvantage and identifying opportunities for community growth.
This report follows three similar ones produced by the Foundation since 2017, which looked at the entire county, as well as West Cumbria and Furness. To ensure the report accurately reflects the needs and priorities of the Carlisle area, a steering group consisting of local individuals has been formed. It will be chaired by Kevin Walsh, Vice Chair of Cumbria Community Foundation.
Walsh expressed the importance of these reports, stating that they have been “key resources” in bringing people together and securing investments to address areas of need in the communities. With projects such as the Southern Relief Road, the Carlisle Station Gateway project, Uncovering Roman Carlisle, and the Pears Cumbria School of Medicine underway, there is a lot of excitement surrounding the city. However, it also faces its fair share of challenges.
“We hope this report will be a key resource and reference document for organizations and businesses in Carlisle, the wider county, and beyond,” said Walsh, emphasizing the potential impact it can have in informing and influencing key decision makers.
The public is invited to attend an online meeting on Tuesday 9 July to learn more about the project. Those interested can register for a spot online at https://register.enthuse.com/ps/event/CarlisleOpportunitiesandChallengesLaunch2024. Additionally, there will be an opportunity for individuals to share their views through an online survey, details of which will be announced soon.
Funding for the report has been provided by Kingmoor Park, Sellafield Ltd, Riverside Housing, and the previous local authorities of Carlisle City Council and Cumbria County Council. It will be used to inform and influence key decision makers, including local authorities, government, potential philanthropists/donors, funders, healthcare providers, businesses, and third sector organizations.
