“Paul James Embarks on a Journey with Bike the UK for MS: Cycling Through Life with MS”

Former RAF serviceman and avid cyclist Paul James, also known as PJ, has faced unexpected challenges in his journey through life. From his time serving in the Royal Air Force to his current passion for cycling, PJ’s story is one of resilience, community, and the power of adventure.

In 2022, PJ’s health took a sudden decline, leading to a diagnosis of Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in January 2023. Despite the initial shock and uncertainty, PJ found strength and support through connecting with others who understood his experience. He emphasizes the importance of talking and being part of a community in coping with the emotional challenges of living with MS.

Now 55 years old, PJ lives in West Sussex with his wife Sarah and their two miniature dachshunds. While MS may have changed some aspects of his life, it has not stopped him from pursuing his love of cycling. PJ explains that MS is unpredictable, and his biggest daily challenge is fatigue. He has had to make adjustments to his daily schedule and work routine to accommodate his energy levels, but refuses to let MS dictate what he can and cannot do.

In fact, cycling has become a critical part of PJ’s MS management. His neurological specialist recommended it to help with joint and muscle strength, as well as the cognitive and emotional benefits. He rides a standard road bike and commutes daily, as well as taking longer recreational rides on weekends through the scenic hills of South Downs and the Surrey Hills.

In 2024, PJ took on the Lon Las Cymru challenge with Bike the UK for MS, and he is set to do it again in 2025. His motivation for riding is twofold: to prove to himself that MS does not define him and to raise funds for MS research and support groups. He recognizes that his journey is part of a bigger picture of people living with MS and believes in the importance of supporting each other through the challenges.

One of the most impactful aspects of riding with Bike the UK for MS has been meeting others along the way. PJ describes the opportunity to meet with MS groups as “fabulous” and has been inspired by the positive attitudes and stories of the people he has encountered. He believes in the power of community and the strength that comes from supporting one another.

Every long-distance ride comes with its share of challenges, but for PJ, those challenges are what make the journey worthwhile. He explains that the camaraderie of fellow riders, the experiences with MS groups, and the personal endeavor of overcoming testy climbs have filled him with joy and appreciation for life. PJ’s message to anyone considering an MS cycling challenge is simple: go for it. He emphasizes the beauty of the landscapes, the opportunity to make new friends, and the feeling of being part of something bigger than oneself.

PJ’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, community, and the spirit of adventure. Through Bike the UK for MS, he has not only continued doing what he loves, but has also contributed to a cause that supports countless others living with MS. His story serves as an inspiration to anyone facing challenges, on or off the bike. Are you ready to take on your own adventure? Join Bike the UK for MS and be part of something truly life-changing.
