Cambridge – Quartix Ltd, a leader in vehicle tracking and telematics, has released data revealing the UK’s top roads for speeding. According to the company’s analysis of its ‘SafeSpeed’ database, the M6 Toll near Birmingham and the M61 are the most common roads for speeding.
The Quartix SafeSpeed database is a comprehensive tool that tracks the speed of thousands of drivers daily. This database is utilized to calculate individual driver scores within Quartix’s fleet tracking system, used by over 35,000 businesses worldwide. These driver scores evaluate a vehicle’s speed in comparison to the designated speed limit and the average speed of other vehicles on the road. This Relative Speed Score provides important context for rural roads, where driving at the speed limit may not always be safe. Quartix customers can use this data to gain a complete understanding of their fleet’s driving performance.
With over 663 million data points, the Quartix SafeSpeed database offers an unparalleled view of speeding trends across the UK’s road network. Quartix has used this data to identify roads with the highest rates of speeding, helping to highlight potential risk zones for road users.
On the M6, 46% of vehicles were found to be traveling over the 70mph speed limit between junction T6 and T5, based on over 7,000 data points. On the M61 near junction 6, 40% of vehicles were traveling above the 70mph speed limit, based on over 16,000 data points.
Mark Cartwright, Head of Commercial Vehicle Incident Prevention at National Highways, emphasizes the importance of proactive safety management for mobile teams: “I think the kind of rich data that businesses can pull from systems such as Quartix is invaluable. I’ve always liked Quartix’s SafeSpeed feature. We know that speed is a significant cause of collisions and certainly makes them more serious.”
For businesses managing fleet vehicles, understanding these trends in high-risk driving behaviors is crucial. By utilizing insights from the SafeSpeed database, they can:
• Implement targeted training: Provide drivers with specific training on safer driving.
• Optimize safety measures: Use data to enforce stricter safety protocols and monitor vehicle speeds.
• Reduce fleet costs: Decrease the risk of accidents, fines, and vehicle wear and tear by promoting safe and fuel-efficient driving practices among staff.
Quartix’s SafeSpeed database provides a strategic advantage, allowing fleet operators to mitigate risks associated with driving at high speeds and ensure the safety of their drivers and vehicles.
