Renowned explorer Ash Dykes has recently revealed his upcoming expedition, Uncharted: Suriname, which is expected to be his most challenging yet. The ambitious journey will take him to the Amazon jungle and rainforest, one of the most treacherous and isolated areas on the planet. Dykes aims to break three world records during this expedition, and if he succeeds, he will add three Guinness World Records to his list of accomplishments.

Ash Dykes Announces Latest Expedition to Suriname with Attempts at Three World Records

British explorer and extreme athlete Ash Dykes has announced his upcoming expedition to Suriname, one of the most unexplored regions and greenest countries in the world. The expedition, titled “Uncharted: Suriname,” will see Ash attempt three world records – one for a world-first and two for speed. This will add to the three world-firsts that he already holds.

The expedition, set to begin in September 2024, will see Ash traverse through the dense rainforests and scale the two highest peaks in Suriname while kayaking from the source of the Coppename River to the sea. This will be Ash’s fourth major expedition and is expected to be his most challenging yet.

Suriname, located on the coast of South America, is known for its 94% rainforest cover, making it one of the last truly wild and pure places on Earth. The source of the Coppename River, which Ash will be navigating through, has only been mapped by satellite due to the thick jungle canopy. Ash will be the first to officially map the source in collaboration with international societies.

The expedition is being sponsored by Free The Wild, a charity co-founded by global pop-icon and animal advocate, Cher. Ash and his support team of three will document the local wildlife and highlight the importance of protecting natural environments around the world.

During the 50-day expedition, Ash will hunt, fish, and gather his own food while sleeping in a hammock between trees at night. He will also have to navigate through some of the most dangerous and isolated environments, home to 20-foot anacondas, electric eels, and piranhas, among other dangerous wildlife.

The trip will begin with a helicopter drop-off in a remote location, where Ash will have to jump into the river due to the lack of landing spots. His first world-first attempt will be to climb the 1280m mountain, almost the same height as Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, in the fastest time ever recorded.

After the mountain climb, Ash will paddle upstream for a week to reach the base of the country’s second-highest peak, attempting another Guinness World Record for the fastest ascent of the two highest peaks in Suriname. The most challenging part of the trip will be locating the true and unmapped source of the Coppename River and navigating through its rapids to reach the coast, becoming the first person to kayak from source to sea.

Ash expressed his excitement and concern for the upcoming expedition, saying, “This may not be my longest expedition, but it’s set to be my most intense, due to how remote and uncharted the area is. And if anything goes wrong – if we need any medical or emergency assistance – it will be extremely difficult to find and get access to us. It’s a journey that will require one hundred per cent focus, 24/7. One wrong footing or one little mistake, the Amazon could make us pay the ultimate price.”

Ash is known for his previous expeditions, including traversing mountains, deserts, and jungles, and facing wild jungles in Madagascar. However, this will be his first expedition to the Amazon, which he describes as bringing a “huge amount of trepidation” but also keeping his mind focused.
