Vion Food Group, one of the largest meat enterprises in the world, has announced the sale of three of its production sites in Germany. On Monday 29 January 2024, the Dutch-German company made the decision to divest its Altenburg site in Thuringia, the Ahlener Fleischhandel in North Rhine-Westphalia, and the Vion Perleberg site in Brandenburg. The transactions were successfully brought to signing within a short period of time, with the support of M&A advisor RSM Ebner Stolz.
The sale of these three sites comes as part of a comprehensive package of measures developed by Vion to strategically adjust its activities in response to developments in the German market. The Altenburg site, which specializes in cattle slaughtering and the production of pre-packed consumer products, as well as the Ahlener Fleischhandel, a ham specialist, have been sold to the Tönnies Group. The pig processing plant in Perleberg, one of the largest fresh pork marketers in Brandenburg, has been sold to Schlachterei Uhlen GmbH.
These transactions are subject to antitrust approvals and will see approximately 700 employees transferred to the respective buyers. RSM Ebner Stolz provided comprehensive support to Vion throughout the entire transaction process, successfully negotiating with the buyers to bring the divestment processes to a swift signing.
Vion’s decision to divest these sites is a response to the current challenges facing the German meat industry and global markets. The outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) has caused a decline in important export destinations, while declining meat consumption and increased competition have impacted business in Germany. The company aims to focus on more attractive market segments and regions.
