UK Organization Advocates for Safe and Healthy Indoor Air in Schools
Today, on Tuesday 23 September 2025, Safe Air Schools UK, a parent-led organization supported by experts, is participating in a landmark event at the United Nations in New York. This event brings together world leaders, international organizations, and civil society to demand safe and healthy indoor air for all.
Sotirios Papathanasiou, air quality expert at Safe Air Schools, is joining global leaders on stage as they sign a pledge to launch a movement focused on making indoor air healthy for everyone. With the belief that inclusive, sustainable, and equitable education starts with the air children breathe, Safe Air Schools is determined to bring attention to the importance of indoor air quality in schools.
In the UK, the Department for Education distributed CO₂ monitors during the height of the pandemic, but their use is not mandated and many schools are reporting challenges. This issue goes beyond just viruses as airborne allergies also pose a threat to children. The DfE acknowledges this in its CO₂ monitor guidance.
As we approach “Week 38” when hospital admissions for pediatric asthma and allergies typically increase, the urgency for addressing this issue is more apparent than ever. Sotirios Papathanasiou states, “By making the invisible world of indoor air visible, air quality monitoring solutions give us the power to truly understand our spaces. This data-driven insight is the key that unlocks adaptive ventilation, allowing buildings to breathe intelligently – providing fresh air precisely when needed and cutting energy waste from needless over-ventilation.”
Nathalie Pearson, founder of Safe Air Schools, emphasizes the importance of educating and empowering children on this issue. She states, “Most children and teachers don’t realize how much classroom air matters. Those who do often face barriers to implementing action. Today, with their schools’ support, two Junior Ambassadors are at the UN to remind the world that the future must be seen and heard.”
This event marks a pivotal moment in recognizing indoor air quality as a crucial aspect of education, inclusion, and public health. Safe Air Schools UK is dedicated to improving air quality in classrooms and is supported by a coalition of independent organizations with the same mission. Long Covid Advocacy is one of these coalition organizations.
