Spain continues to attract international tourists in record numbers with 8.17 million visitors in October, an increase of 13.9% on October 2022 and 7.8% on October 2019.
According to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), this brings the total number of tourists to Spain in the first 10 months of 2023 to 74.7 million, exceeding the figure for 2019 and 18.2% higher than the same period in 2022. Tourists also spent a record 10.308 billion euros in October, an increase of 23.9% on the best figure recorded in October 2019 and 24% on October 2022.
The average spending per traveller and average stay also reflected growth, with each tourist spending an average of 1,260 euros in October, 9.8% more than last year and 14.9% more than in 2019. Spending per day also increased to 185 euros, 15% more than in 2019 and up 10.6% year-on-year.
The UK was the highest source of tourists with 1,712,267 visitors, up 12.2% on October 2022, followed by Germany with 1,144,516 visitors (8% more than in October 2022) and France with 997,926 tourists (9% more than in October 2022).
The Ministry of Industry and Tourism’s efforts to attract long-haul markets paid off with tourists from the US increasing by 25.7% compared to the same month last year.
Catalonia was the most popular destination, with 20.4% of the total, followed by the Balearic Islands (18.0%) and the Canary Islands (15.5%).
Industry and Tourism Minister Jordi Hereu said the figures show “we are transforming the historical nature of our tourism: Spain is still the leader, the recovery of the sector is absolute and full, but we are diversifying and deseasonalising flows, which results in a more sustainable tourism that is less dependent on the high summer season”.
