“Spice Girls Celebrate 30 Years of Girl Power!”

British Music Experience to Host Exhibition Honoring 30 Years of the Spice Girls

The British Music Experience (BME) is proud to announce the launch of their latest temporary exhibition, “Girl Power! Spice Girls at 30.” Opening on February 7th, 2024 and running until September 8th, the exhibition will celebrate the iconic girl group’s 30th anniversary and their lasting impact on the music industry.

The Spice Girls first burst onto the scene in 1994 with an advertisement in The Stage asking for “street smart, extrovert, ambitious” singers and dancers. From there, they skyrocketed to fame with their debut single “Wannabe” topping the charts in 31 countries and selling 80 million records. The group had nine UK Number One singles and became one of the most successful girl groups in history.

“Girl Power! Spice Girls at 30” will showcase the band’s journey through iconic outfits from the personal collection of independent curator Liz West, who holds the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of Spice Girls memorabilia and merchandise. West began collecting items from the group in 1996 and has since amassed a stunning collection of costumes and other items, all lovingly preserved in their original packaging.

The exhibition will also feature audio-visual elements, including a stage show montage of the Spice Girls’ biggest hits and listening stations. The BME has planned a season of activities to support the exhibition, including school tours, film screenings, conversations, acoustic performances, and a special quiz night. The Museum’s merchandise store will also be selling a range of Spice Girls apparel and giftware.

Director of BME, Elizabeth Koravos, expressed her excitement for the exhibition, stating, “The British Music Experience is delighted to showcase the highlights of Liz West’s record-breaking collection of Spice Girls memorabilia through our new exhibition, ‘Girl Power! Spice Girls at 30.’ We are excited to explore the Spice Girls’ meteoric success of the 1990s and their enduring impact. This exhibition will remind us of the phenomenon that was the Spice Girls and their influence on an entire generation.”

Liz West, the curator of the exhibition, also shared her enthusiasm, saying, “I have wanted to exhibit my Spice Girls collection with the British Music Experience ever since I was invited to speak about my super-fandom for an interactive display when the museum first launched in London in 2009. Bringing my collection to Liverpool is particularly fitting as it pays homage to ‘Sporty Spice’ Melanie C, who hails from Widnes and is forever proud of her Northern heritage. I am proud to be exhibiting costumes and items that have never been seen in public before. I hope this exciting exhibition brings back nostalgia and reminds visitors how influential and lively those 5 girls are… Girl Power!”

“Girl Power! Spice Girls at 30” is included with all general entry tickets to the BME. General entry tickets are valid for 12 months, and visitors have the option to support the museum by adding a donation when purchasing their tickets.

Tickets for the launch night will go on sale on Monday, January 15th, 2024, at 10am and cost £10 each.
