Taking Care has commended the Government for their guidance on Digital Switchover for personal alarms and is offering clear advice to new customers.

Thousands of older and vulnerable people in the UK may be at risk of losing their personal alarm services as the country’s analogue phone network approaches its end-of-life. In response, the government has launched a national campaign to raise awareness about the ongoing upgrade to digital technology and its impact on telecare services.

As a leading personal alarm company and provider of services for Age UK, Taking Care is urging the industry to take further action by providing clearer and more practical advice for individuals and families who may benefit from a personal alarm but do not currently have one. This will ensure that people only purchase digital-ready alarms and are not misled by pricing or unexpected upgrade charges.

“We are proud to be part of this government initiative and applaud their recognition of the importance of telecare as a critical, life-saving service,” says Steve Gates, Managing Director at Taking Care. “However, we are concerned that some providers are still selling analogue-only alarms, despite the impending switchover. This is misleading for customers and puts vulnerable adults at risk of not being fully protected. It also exposes them to unexpected costs for upgrades.”

Taking Care has been offering fully digital alarms since 2022 and has plans in place to support and upgrade their existing analogue alarm customers.

To combat confusion, Taking Care has also launched a dedicated online resource, www.taking.care/checkmyalarm, where people can check the type of alarm they have and learn what to look for when purchasing a new, future-ready device.

“We have provided guidance to ensure that customers looking for a new life-saving personal alarm do not accidentally purchase an outdated analogue device,” says Steve Gates. “Clear and practical advice is essential to ensure that individuals’ next alarm is fully digital and ready for the future.”

Taking Care recommends that new customers choose providers that:

– Only sell digital personal alarms
– Are accredited by TSA (Telecare Services Association)
– Provide transparent pricing with no hidden costs
– Include data, SIM, and software upgrades as standard.
