Hamburg Prepares for 835th Port Anniversary in May 2024
The city of Hamburg is gearing up for its 835th Port Anniversary, set to take place from May 9th to 12th, 2024. This annual event, known as the “maritime birthday party” of Hamburg, promises a diverse program for visitors to enjoy. This year, the international country partner is Latvia.
The festivities will kick off on Thursday, May 9th with the International Ecumenical Opening Service at 2 p.m. in the main Church of St. Michael’s. This will be followed by the arrival parade at 4 p.m., led by the frigate “Hamburg”. These traditional highlights are expected to draw a large crowd.
One of the main attractions of the Hamburg Port Anniversary is the unique tugboat ballet, which will take place on Saturday at 5 p.m. Visitors can also witness the departure parade on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. These events, along with the presence of around 250 ships, are sure to create a memorable experience for all attendees. Among the ships expected to participate are the impressive tall ships “Dar Młodzieży” and “Alexander von Humboldt II”.
One of the most highly anticipated events of the anniversary celebration is the music on the Elbe. On Friday evening at 8:45 p.m., a major surprise show will take place on a gigantic floating stage, transforming the Elbe into a sea of lights. The show will be accompanied by a special soundtrack and will feature three captivating acts, culminating in a grand finale. The night will end with a majestic anniversary fireworks display, lighting up the sky with a sparkling panorama of color.
Another highlight of the Port Anniversary is set to take place on Saturday at 10:30 p.m., when AIDA Cruises presents a particularly stunning maritime display. The AIDAprima will shine in the heart of Hamburg, providing a new perspective of the city and the Elbe.
