The campaign ‘Twisters’ is needed in Europe.

European Researchers Collaborate to Better Understand Severe Storms

Wiener Neustadt, Austria – Severe weather researchers from 14 European countries are joining forces to conduct high-density measurements of severe storms, inspired by the new film “Twisters.” The goal of this collaboration is to gain a deeper understanding of these storms and provide more accurate warnings in the future. The European “TIM” measurement campaign, set to launch in 2026, is the largest of its kind to date and will utilize the latest technologies, including weather drones.

Initiated by Alois Holzer, the campaign will rely on mobile measurement teams that will get as close to the storms as possible. “To achieve this, it is crucial to use the latest technologies, such as weather drones. These measurements will provide us with valuable insights into these severe thunderstorms,” explains Holzer.

Just like in the movie “Twisters,” the European research teams will also be equipped with the newest generation of weather sensors. However, Holzer emphasizes that the highest safety standards will be followed, and the teams have committed to responsible behavior toward the environment and local communities.

To ensure that the project is successful, major donors are being sought to support the individual mobile measurement teams. “We hope to secure the same level of support from major donors that is possible in North America. We are also in discussions with various public authorities,” says Alois Holzer.
