The Charles SLBG Foundation and First Derm have successfully completed a skin cancer screening campaign.

The Charles SLBG Foundation and First Derm have successfully completed a 30-month campaign focused on raising awareness and promoting early detection of skin cancer. The initiative, which ran from February 2022 to August 2024, provided 3,000 UK-based individuals with free access to online dermatologists through the First Derm platform.

The impact of this campaign was significant, with 43 potential cases of melanoma being detected early. This not only has the potential to save lives but also to avoid healthcare costs totaling £205,400. The success of this initiative highlights the critical role of accessible and timely dermatologist consultations in reducing skin cancer fatalities.

The Charles SLBG Foundation was established in memory of Charles, who tragically lost his life to stage 4 metastatic melanoma in 2011. The foundation is dedicated to raising awareness about skin cancer and preventing premature deaths through early diagnosis and treatment. Through the use of First Derm’s platform, users were able to upload images of their skin concerns and receive an evaluation from a certified dermatologist within 24 hours. The majority of users were males between the ages of 20 and 29, emphasizing the importance of targeting younger generations in the fight against skin cancer.

The Charles SLBG Foundation raised £50,000 to cover the costs of consultations and advertising, making the service accessible to thousands at no cost. This collaboration between the foundation and First Derm showcases the effectiveness of early detection in saving lives and reducing healthcare costs. The success of this campaign is a testament to the foundation’s commitment to creating a future free of skin cancer deaths. The full report can be found here.
