Art × Science International is making waves in the literary world with its innovative use of advanced AI technology to adapt classic literature for readers with ADHD. Founded in 2024, the non-profit organization is dedicated to creating accessible reading experiences for both children and adults with ADHD, while also preserving the integrity of the original texts. All profits from their work are reinvested into expanding this high-tech, accessible content in France.
The core challenge for Art × Science International is to make complex literary works digestible and engaging for minds prone to distraction, without losing the unique style and depth of the original author. To achieve this, the organization has developed a proprietary AI platform that performs multi-level textual analysis and adaptation. This includes advanced Natural Language Processing algorithms, inspired by GPT-like architectures and fine-tuned on literary corpora, to identify complex sentences and dense paragraphs. The AI then intelligently rephrases or breaks down these sections while retaining the original authorial voice.
The AI platform also utilizes chapter segmentation and non-linear reading features, automatically identifying optimal breakpoints for shorter chapters and constructing “story graphs” using graph databases. These graphs map characters, events, themes, and relationships, and suggest alternative pathways through the narrative, allowing readers to follow their specific interests while maintaining coherence and engagement.
In addition, Art × Science International recognizes the importance of multi-modal input and uses AI to suggest illustrations and visual aids based on the text’s descriptive passages and emotional tone. This helps to reduce mental imagery load and reinforce comprehension.
The organization’s AI is designed for scalability, with a goal of adapting 4,500 books in three languages. The initial focus is on comprehensive French content, with plans for translation into English and Spanish. This involves a collaborative workflow between the AI and human literary and neurodiversity experts to ensure pedagogical soundness and literary quality.
“Our AI is not about replacing human creativity but augmenting it to break down barriers to literature,” explained Noé Cabannes Michel, executive at Art × Science International. “We’re essentially teaching our models the art of literary empathy – understanding both the author’s intent and the reader’s cognitive needs. The goal is to transform classic texts into dynamically accessible experiences.”
Art × Science International invites technology partners, AI researchers, and individuals to support its mission. Donations are vital for ongoing research and deployment of content. Early trials of the AI-enhanced texts have already shown positive impacts, with parents and educators noting significant improvements in engagement and comprehension among children with ADHD. The organization plans to open registration for crowdsourcing with microtasks available, further develop its “Sapere aude” project, and distribute initial copies to teachers, journalists, and early supporters for feedback. They also plan to progressively launch the 4,500 AI-enhanced titles in bookstores.
