Age Concern Hampshire Honors Heroes of D-Day with Commemorative Events

On Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024, Age Concern Hampshire paid tribute to the brave heroes of D-Day with a series of commemorative events held at their Care and Wellbeing Centres, Hospital to Home Wards, and wellbeing services. These events provided an opportunity for reflection, gratitude, and community support as attendees came together to honor the bravery and sacrifice of those who served 80 years ago.

One of the events was held at Petersfield Community Hospital and was supported by Age Concern Hampshire’s Hospital to Home Services. The highlight of the event was 108-year-old war veteran Eric “Pony” Moore, who shared his personal stories and experiences from his time as a Second World War veteran. Serving in the army, Eric spent time in Palestine at an RAF dental hospital and held the rank of Lance Corporal during his eight-year stationing in Egypt.

The Petersfield Royal British Legion also joined in the celebrations at the hospital, enjoying tea and cake with staff, volunteers, and patients. Jo Gray from Shine Radio also attended the event, conducting interviews with patients to ensure their stories were not only heard, but also honored and respected during the commemoration.

“We were honored to commemorate the heroes of D-Day across a series of events,” said Helen Callen, CEO of Age Concern Hampshire. “These events not only allowed us to pay tribute to the incredible bravery and sacrifice of our veterans, but also provided an opportunity for our community to come together in solidarity and gratitude.”

At the charity’s Care and Wellbeing Centres, clients and staff came together to continue the celebrations and pay tribute to the heroes of D-Day. They engaged in activities and took moments of reflection to honor the courage and selflessness of those who fought for freedom eighty years ago.
