On Tuesday 15 October, 2024, Cornwall’s social landlord Coastline Housing held an awards ceremony to recognize and celebrate individuals who have made a significant impact in their local communities. The event, known as the Customer at the Heart Awards, took place in Redruth and honored a diverse group of recipients who were nominated by friends, neighbors, and other community figures.
Among the esteemed winners was Seren Blackmore from Padstow, who was awarded the Young Hero title for her dedicated efforts in keeping her neighborhood clean. Despite being too old to use the communal park near her home, Seren took it upon herself to pick up litter and properly dispose of it. She also showed kindness and support to children who were being bullied in the park.
Izzy MacQueen, the owner of 7th Rise, an eco-friendly venue that offers outdoor experiences on the Fal River, received the Partnership Working Award for her generous contributions to Coastline’s Homeless Service. After meeting some of the service’s clients during a foraging workshop, Izzy offered to provide her venue for free on a monthly basis. This gesture has had a profound impact on the well-being and confidence of the clients.
Hussain Layne, a volunteer at Coastline’s Homeless Service, was recognized with the Your Next Step award for his personal journey and his dedicated efforts in helping others at the service. He played a crucial role in transforming an unused area into a multifunctional activity space, and also took the initiative to establish a newsletter and represent other voices in different resident groups and focus sessions.
Dermot Dooley from Bodmin was awarded the Green Champion title for his dedication to maintaining a safe and inviting outdoor space for children in his community. He also helps other neighbors with their gardens and prioritizes planting for the benefit of wildlife.
The Community Volunteer of the Year award went to Tim Davis of Truro, who has been volunteering at Coastline’s Homeless Service since 2019. Tim organizes regular walks in nature to encourage physical activity and exploration of different areas in Cornwall, which have become very popular among the community.
Jeanette Evans from Redruth received the Miners Minder Award for her weekly card game lessons at Coastline’s Miners Court Extra Care scheme. Her patience, positivity, and ability to bring laughter to the sessions have made them a regular and highly anticipated event.
The Good Neighbour Award was given to Kimberley Croft for his selfless dedication to maintaining a clean and welcoming environment for his community. He also participates in group sessions and classes, inspiring others to do the same.
Joe Ferguson from Helston was honored with a special Long Service Award for his longstanding involvement in Coastline’s activities and his commitment to bringing about positive outcomes for his fellow customers.
Allister Young, Chief Executive of Coastline Housing, and Steve Harrison, retiring Chair of Coastline, presented the awards and commended the recipients for their contributions. Young stated, “Each and every person nominated deserves true congratulations for the impact they have had on their local community, neighbors, and others. They are an example to us all.”
