The Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, an independent charity dedicated to protecting and promoting the conservation of Scotland’s National Park, applauds the recent progress made by Scottish and Southern in their plans for the Sloy pumped storage project near Tarbet on Loch Lomond.
On Wednesday 17 September, 2025, Tarbet resident and trustee of the charity, Duncan MacLachlan, expressed his satisfaction with the project’s advancement, stating, “We are pleased to see that the Sloy Power Station redevelopment as a Pumped Storage facility has successfully passed through the National Park’s planning processes.”
While the application is still awaiting assessment under the Section 36 category, the charity is confident that the Scottish Government will grant approval. This is due to the project’s potential to store surplus renewable solar and wind energy, providing stability for the national power distribution grid and enhancing energy security for the country.
In addition to its positive impact on Scotland’s energy sector, the project will also bring economic benefits to the local community. MacLachlan adds, “The project will not only elevate the iconic Modernist Classical building of Sloy Power Station, but it will also provide much-needed economic benefits for the surrounding area.”
The Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs are pleased with the progress made by Scottish and Southern in their pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. They look forward to the continued success of the Sloy pumped storage project and its contributions to the conservation and economic development of Scotland’s National Park.
