The International Pharmacy Association is calling on the newly appointed UK Foreign Secretary to make innovation in global health aid a top priority.

The Commonwealth Pharmacists Association (CPA) has expressed their warm congratulations to The Rt. Hon. Yvette Cooper MP on her appointment as Secretary of State for Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs. The CPA, which holds the Chair of the Commonwealth Health Professions and Partnerships Alliance (CHPA), also paid tribute to the outgoing Secretary of State, The Rt. Hon. David Lammy MP, for his dedicated service.

As an organisation that has been at the forefront of delivering impactful and sustainable global health development projects in Africa and Asia, the CPA has worked closely with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office over the last five years. The organisation is now calling upon the new Secretary of State to meet with organisations like theirs to explore new models for delivering international aid programmes, especially in light of current financial pressures.

The CPA highlights the success of programmes that invest in improving workforce capability, developing professional skills, and increasing access to essential healthcare resources such as preventative medicines. These initiatives have proven to have a significant impact on global health outcomes at a lower cost than traditional aid programmes. As a leader in delivering high-impact, innovative, and cost-effective work in this area, the CPA is eager to collaborate with the new Foreign Secretary.

The CPA urges the new Secretary of State to engage with key stakeholders to explore how the UK’s Official Development Assistance schemes can continue to save lives, both directly around the world and indirectly in the UK by mitigating the spread of infectious diseases and epidemics that know no national borders. Despite the fiscal challenges faced by the government, the CPA believes that with the right approach, the UK can continue to make a significant difference in global health.
