Powerful New Staging of ‘The A Word’ Shines Light on Coercive Control in Lesbian Relationships
London, England – This summer, a powerful new staging of ‘The A Word’ will be premiering at three London theatres, shedding light on the hidden truth of coercive control in relationships.
Originally staged in 2023, ‘The A Word’ has been re-imagined for 2025 by best-selling author, filmmaker, and playwright Jade Winters. The new version delves deeper into the quiet, insidious reality of emotional abuse and highlights how even close friends can miss the signs.
The play will open at the Golden Goose Theatre on August 23rd before moving to the Drayton Arms Theatre on September 14th and 15th and the Bread & Roses Theatre on November 9th and 10th. This intimate and powerful drama explores the dangerous effects of love turning controlling and the damaging consequences of silence.
At its core, ‘The A Word’ is an intimate portrayal of emotional abuse within a lesbian relationship – a story that is rarely told on stage with such rawness and sensitivity. The main character, Brooke, lives under the quiet tyranny of coercive control, while her friends become increasingly concerned as they witness her confusion, evasions, and unspoken truths.
