On Wednesday 5th July, lawyers and their colleagues from across Oxford will come together for the Oxford Legal Walk, a 10k walk led by HH Judge Joanna Vincent and the High Sheriff of Oxfordshire, Sally Scott, to raise money for free specialist legal advice agencies in Oxford. Last year saw over 200 people from law firms, barristers’ chambers, legal advice agencies, courts, law schools and those associated with the law industry taking part, with a total of £16,000 raised. Anyone can join in and help support free legal advice in Oxford, whether walking in teams or alone.
Judge Joanna Vincent, from Oxford Combined Court, said: “Last year, the Oxford Legal Walk supported many Oxford advice agencies, including Agnes Smith Advice Centre, Oxfordshire Welfare Rights and Citizens Advice Oxford. This support is vital at a time when many of our services are dealing with the challenging effects of the cost of living crisis.”
“The Oxford Legal Walk changes real lives by allowing advice centres to support people facing homelessness, discrimination, wrongly denied benefit claims and asylum issues and who can’t afford to pay for a lawyer and access justice.”
An example of this is Ruby, a person with a long-term physical health condition causing severe chronic pain. She had been refused sickness benefit by the Department for Work and Pensions, but was able to successfully appeal the decision and claim for disability benefit, thanks to the help of a free legal advice agency.
The Oxford Legal Walk is now in its 6th year, organised in collaboration between Oxford Advice Agencies and the London Legal Support Trust (LLST). LLST was set up in 2003 to promote fair access to justice, and works to support over 100 frontline free legal advice charities in London and the south-east.
