UK’s Ovacome Charity to Host Two Events in Wales This August
Ovacome, the UK’s leading ovarian cancer support charity, has announced that they will be hosting two events in Wales this August. Ovarian cancer is a serious disease that affects 7,500 individuals in the UK every year, with one in 50 women expected to receive a diagnosis in their lifetime. These events are crucial in providing support and information to those affected by the disease, who often feel isolated and alone.
The first event, a Community and Support day, will take place on Friday 15 August in Brecon. This event will provide an opportunity for anyone affected by ovarian cancer to speak with the Ovacome support team and learn more about the resources and assistance they offer. It will also serve as a chance for organizations that support communities in Wales to learn about the warning signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.
Liz Waters, Ovacome’s Health Equalities Manager, emphasized the importance of this event, stating, “We are delighted to be visiting Brecon to meet local community organizations and people affected by ovarian cancer. Ovacome is committed to tackling health inequalities, and we know how important it is to meet underserved communities, including those who live in rural areas, to understand how we can remove the barriers that exist when accessing information, diagnosis, treatment and support for ovarian cancer.”
The second event, a Health and Wellbeing Day, will take place on Saturday 16 August at the Clayton Hotel in Cardiff. This event is open to anyone who has been affected by ovarian cancer, including friends and family of those diagnosed. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from experts and participate in workshops focused on living well with the disease. The event will also provide a chance for those affected by ovarian cancer to connect with others who share their experience.
Anna Hudson, head of Ovacome’s Support Services, expressed her excitement for the Cardiff event, saying, “We’ve not had a chance to provide an event in Wales since 2019, so we’re excited to be returning to Cardiff to meet with our members in Wales. We’ve got a fantastic line-up of speakers, and we’re delighted to be welcoming expert clinician Dr Sadie Jones, as well as experts leading sessions in Diet, Music for Relaxation and Sound Bath Therapy.”
Amanda, an Ovacome member who will be attending the Cardiff event with her husband Mark, encourages others affected by ovarian cancer to attend the day. She was diagnosed with the disease in 2016 and has been utilizing Ovacome for information and support for the past seven years. “I would really encourage anyone based in or near Wales, who’ve been affected by ovarian cancer in any way, to just give the Health and Wellbeing Day a try!” she said. “Ovacome has been just brilliant for me, it’s so community-based, so understanding and so supportive.”
