EMMS International, a healthcare charity based in Scotland, is pleased to announce the release of its first publication detailing the process of solarising a hospital. The article, published in Tropical Doctor, outlines the successful implementation of a new electricity supply system at Mulanje Mission Hospital in Malawi.
The hospital, which has been renovating and reinstalling its solar power and electrical system since 2021, faced frequent electricity outages due to insufficient supply, natural disasters, and poor infrastructure. These outages not only affected patient care but also put the safety of both patients and staff at risk.
Thanks to the generous support of EMMS International, the hospital was able to receive a donation of €104,997 to fund this urgent project. The partnership between EMMS International and Mulanje Mission Hospital dates back to the late 1800s, and in recent years, EMMS has donated over £1.3 million to support various initiatives at the hospital.
The newly implemented 3-phase grid-coupled solar electricity system at Mulanje Mission Hospital can now be controlled via a mobile app by the maintenance supervisor. This allows for better management of the system, especially during times of bad weather or grid outages. The hospital’s electricity bills have been reduced by 60.6%, and the need for diesel to power the generator has significantly decreased. This has also resulted in improved water supply, as power for borehole pumping is now constantly available.
The reliable electricity reaching all departments of the hospital has created a stable working environment for staff, allowing them to focus on providing excellent patient care. Dr. Arie Glas, Medical Director of Mulanje Mission Hospital, is optimistic that the publication of this successful project will inspire other hospitals to adopt solar power and reduce their running costs.
He stated, “Many more hospitals can go green, end blackouts, and save running costs!”.
EMMS International and Mulanje Mission Hospital are proud to have achieved this milestone in their partnership and hope to continue making a positive impact in the community through sustainable and innovative solutions.
