The pharmacies in Germany are facing pressure as the Statistical Yearbook 2025 becomes available.

ABDA Releases Statistical Yearbook on German Pharmacies Amid Decrease in Numbers

Berlin, Germany – The Federal Union of German Associations of Pharmacists, also known as ABDA, has recently released their latest Statistical Yearbook titled “German Pharmacies: Figures, Data, Facts 2025”. The comprehensive publication offers an in-depth overview of the latest trends in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors not just in Germany, but also globally. This year’s edition showcases a decrease in the number of pharmacies across the country, with only 17,041 remaining as of the end of 2024. This is the lowest number recorded since the end of the 1970s.

One of the primary reasons for the decline in pharmacy numbers is the economic difficulties faced by many pharmacies. Despite the increasing demand for pharmaceutical services, the pharmacy remuneration has not been elevated in the past 12 years. As a result, around 25 percent of German pharmacies are currently earning less than 75,000 Euros a year, while 7 percent are operating at a loss.

The Statistical Yearbook, which spans over 130 pages, features a revamped design and several new features to make the information more accessible. In addition to statistics on Germany’s community pharmacies and their services, the publication also covers various international topics such as “Pharmacy Density across Europe”, “Supply Shortages in Europe”, “Ukrainians and Syrians in the Pharmacy Profession”, “Pharmacy-related Legal Regulations in Europe”, “Comparison by Country: Vaccinations in Pharmacies”, and “Value-added Tax on Pharmaceuticals”. There is even a separate chapter dedicated to “Europe, Migration, Integration, and Sustainability”.

The German version of the Statistical Yearbook was first released on 7 June 2025, in conjunction with Pharmacy Day. Both German and English editions are available for download on ABDA’s website. ABDA is the top-level organization for pharmacists in Germany and works to represent the interests of the pharmaceutical healthcare professions in politics and society. The organization also promotes high-quality and comprehensive pharmaceutical care in the country. ABDA is a member of the Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union (PGEU), the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), and the World Pharmacy Council (WPC).
