The reptile market at the garden centre was promptly shut down.

Woodbank Garden Centre & Nurseries in Bingley has made the responsible decision to cancel the upcoming reptile market, originally planned for June 22nd, 2025. The announcement was made on the garden center’s Facebook page on Wednesday, June 11th, 2025.

The decision has been met with praise from animal welfare groups, who have deemed it appropriate given the information received from Bradford City Council regarding potential law-breaking at the event and possible violations of the garden center’s pet shop license.

Woodbank Garden Centre joins a growing number of venues across the UK that have chosen not to host or associate themselves with reptile markets. This trend is a result of increased public awareness of the inhumane conditions that are typical of these events, as well as improved enforcement by local councils.

The International Herpetological Society, organizer of this large-scale event, seems to be running out of options as more venues refuse to host the market. Reptile markets are often falsely advertised as “shows” or “breeders’ meetings” when in reality they are commercial markets, with thousands of animals being sold.

During these events, reptiles and amphibians are kept in small, plastic containers that restrict their movement and prevent them from stretching or turning around. They are often deprived of food, water, and proper environmental conditions such as temperature, lighting, and humidity.

Elaine Toland, Director of the Animal Protection Agency, commends the actions of Bradford City Council and Woodbank Garden Centre, stating that their decision sends a clear message that animal welfare is a priority. She also adds that the agency will continue to fight against these outdated practices.

Laura Walton, Campaigns Manager for Freedom for Animals, emphasizes that these events are not shows, but rather trade events that exploit vulnerable animals. She expresses gratitude to Woodbank Garden Centre for making the right decision.

Charlotte Regan, Wildlife Campaigns Manager for World Animal Protection, also applauds the cancellation of the reptile market, stating that wild animals should not be exploited in this manner.

The Animal Protection Agency, World Animal Protection, and Freedom for Animals are working together to put an end to the inhumane trading of wild animals at markets. Their efforts, along with the actions of responsible venues such as Woodbank Garden Centre, are crucial steps towards achieving this goal.
