The strain for family carers in Hampshire is being eased.

Age Concern Hampshire, a charity dedicated to providing services for the older community in Hampshire, is shining a light on the dedication and challenges faced by family caregivers during National Family Caregivers Month this November. With over 25,000 unpaid carers in the county, many of whom are caring for someone with dementia, the organization is bringing attention to the emotional and physical strain that comes with providing care for a loved one.

The role of a family caregiver can be overwhelming, and navigating the complex support systems and financial assistance options can be daunting. Many families are unaware of funding options that could ease the financial burden, such as Local Authority support and Attendance Allowance. To address this issue, Age Concern Hampshire’s Information Service team is available to guide carers through the application process, providing advice, support, and practical assistance. Their mission is to ensure that carers do not miss out on financial support that can make a real difference in their daily lives.

In addition to offering guidance, Age Concern Hampshire also provides vital respite through its Care and Wellbeing Centres in Dibden, New Milton, Locks Heath, and Yateley. These centres offer tailored day care for people living with dementia, including stimulating activities and social engagement with transport and lunch options. This gives carers the opportunity to have time to themselves and focus on their own wellbeing while knowing their loved ones are supported in a safe and friendly environment.

Hannah Park, Head of Operations at Age Concern Hampshire, recognizes the immense contribution of family carers and the need for support. She stated, “Family carers in Hampshire give so much, often without recognition. Between the emotional strain and navigating complex support systems, it is essential they have access to guidance and practical help. Our teams are here to make that process easier and to provide respite so carers can recharge.”
