New economic modelling has revealed that the roll out of 5G-enabled technologies across the NHS could save almost £1billion per year. This would be thanks to improvements in remote check-ups and patient monitoring, reducing the need for GP and hospital visits.
The study also found that the introduction of 5G across the energy and rail sectors could result in increased efficiency and safety levels.
Dr. Stuart Cook, a senior lecturer in Digital Economy at the University of Surrey, said: “5G is set to revolutionise the way we interact with the world around us, providing a unique opportunity to drive productivity and efficiency across a range of sectors.”
“The implications of this research are far-reaching and demonstrate the significant economic gains that are possible with a rapid 5G roll-out.”
The research, commissioned by Huawei and conducted by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr), highlighted the potential for 5G-enabled technology to revolutionise a range of sectors in the UK economy, with the greatest potential being the NHS.
Huawei’s Chief Security Officer, Andy Purdy, commented: “This research provides a compelling economic case for the full deployment of 5G in the UK.”
“We must now work together to ensure the UK’s 5G roll-out is unleashed to its full potential, delivering the economic, health and safety benefits to the UK public in the near future.”
