The Welsh-Made Documentary ‘The Red List’ Puts a Focus on the Unsung Heroes of Plant Conservation.

Independent filmmaker Ross Pierson has announced the release of a new documentary titled “The Red List,” shedding light on the vital work being done by the National Botanic Garden of Wales to protect the nation’s most endangered plant species. The film, entirely self-funded and filmed over the course of a year, pairs stunning visuals with the narration of celebrated naturalist Iolo Williams.

Directed by Ross Pierson, the film aims to bring attention to the often-overlooked field of plant conservation. “Plant conservation rarely grabs headlines, yet it underpins almost every ecosystem on Earth,” says Pierson. “When I learned about the passionate work being done at the Garden, I knew it deserved a spotlight. This film invites audiences to look beyond what’s often called ‘plant blindness’ and witness the fight to save our botanical heritage.”

The film follows the work of botanist Dr. Kevin McGinn and his colleagues at the National Botanic Garden of Wales as they contribute to global conservation efforts from their base in Carmarthenshire. Viewers are taken on a journey through the Garden’s laboratories, horticultural center, and remote locations in the Welsh countryside, where rare and endangered plants are being studied and protected.

Key sequences in the film include the race to locate and propagate endangered species in Wales, the search for rare plants in unexpected habitats, and a vital seed-banking partnership with London’s Kew Gardens to preserve biodiversity for future generations. The personal stories of the scientists and horticulturists at the Garden are also highlighted, showcasing their unwavering dedication to conservation and their belief that Wales can lead on the world stage.

“The Red List” will make its premiere at the Raindance Film Festival on June 27th, 2025, followed by an exclusive screening at the National Botanic Garden of Wales’s Theatre Botanica on July 25th, 2025. The July event will also serve as the finale of a joint crowdfunding campaign between Pierson and the Garden to support the film’s final production costs and wider distribution.
