The world’s oceans day was marked by International Animal Rescue, Costa Rica, with the first sea lion rescue.

International Animal Rescue (IAR) shared a heartwarming rescue story this week, just in time for World Oceans Day on June 8th. The story of ‘Pickle’ the sea lion highlights the importance of ocean conservation and animal protection.

According to Francisco Sánchez Murillo, Veterinary Director of IAR Costa Rica, this is the first recorded rescue and successful release of a sea lion for their organization. While sea lions are not native to Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, they occasionally appear due to shifting ocean currents.

The rescue took place a few days ago when the team at IAR Costa Rica was alerted to a sea lion in distress. The team quickly responded and found the animal with minor wounds and external parasites on its tail. After treating the animal and conducting a full health assessment, including a blood work, a marine mammal expert veterinarian from Costa Rica determined that the sea lion was fit to return to the wild.

Gavin Bruce, CEO of International Animal Rescue, emphasized the significance of this rescue, stating, “It’s a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting marine ecosystems and all the creatures that depend on them.” He also expressed his excitement for the successful release of the sea lion, saying, “It’s a great result that we were able to help this sea lion back to health and return it to the ocean so quickly.”

Francisco Sánchez Murillo, Veterinary Director of IAR Costa Rica, added, “Sea lions are considered sentinel species because of their high position in the food chain and long lifespans. They are highly sensitive to environmental changes and pollutants, helping us to understand the health of our oceans. Sea lions play a crucial role in marine ecosystems.”

Thanks to the expert care and collaboration with marine specialists, the sea lion has been successfully released back into the wild. This World Oceans Day, IAR not only celebrates a successful rescue and release but also renews their commitment to protecting the ocean and its incredible biodiversity.
