“Visitors invited to uncover Weelsby Hall’s hidden history during Heritage Open Day in Grimsby”

Weelsby Hall, a historical landmark in Grimsby, will be opening its doors to the public for a rare opportunity to explore its rich heritage. Owned by Linkage Community Trust, this exclusive event will take place on Sunday 15th September 2024 as part of the Heritage Open Days Festival.

The Heritage Open Days Festival is England’s largest festival celebrating history and culture. Since its first opening to the public in 2020, the event has become an annual tradition due to its popularity, attracting visitors eager to learn about the history of one of North East Lincolnshire’s most grand Victorian buildings.

Built in the late 1890s for George Sleight, the first Baronet of Weelsby, the hall stands as a symbol of Grimsby’s illustrious fishing heritage. In 1982, the Linkage Community Trust acquired Weelsby Hall and has since been using it to serve the needs of people with learning disabilities. This open day provides a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the heritage of this grand building through a self-guided tour of the grounds and downstairs rooms, as well as short guided tours of select rooms on the first floor.

David, a local historian and project volunteer, expressed his excitement for the event, stating, “Visitors will be able to discover a part of the area’s history that is often overlooked, predominantly because many are not aware of its existence. Most of the large and fascinating homes in Grimsby have either been demolished or converted, with no public access. Although Weelsby Hall is no longer a family home, much of the home remains, and it is a pleasure to be able to share its splendour with the community.”

Aside from exploring the estate’s historical significance, attendees will also learn about the ongoing efforts to preserve Weelsby Hall. With support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Linkage is working towards building an inclusive and sustainable future for generations to come while ensuring that the hall remains an integral part of Grimsby’s cultural landscape.

To join Linkage for this day of historical exploration and community celebration at Weelsby Hall, booking is essential. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to step back in time and appreciate a key piece of Grimsby’s heritage during the Heritage Open Days Festival.
