Yanfeng, a leading global automotive supplier, has unveiled its Electric Vehicle Interior (EVI) concept for the first time in Europe. The unveiling took place in Neuss, Germany on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. The company’s vision for the EVI is to provide a unique interior experience that embodies the concept of freedom, creating a space that offers ample room for the body and relaxation for the mind.
One of the key features of the EVI concept is the elimination of the traditional instrument panel. Instead, all key functions have been integrated into an innovative Smart Cabin seat module. This includes intelligent surfaces for vehicle operation and control, an active headrest with audio functions, advanced safety systems, seat-integrated climate control, and practical storage and charging options.
According to Patrik Nebout, Chief Technology Officer at Yanfeng, the development of the EVI concept was based on comprehensive studies conducted by the company’s research team. These studies revealed that electric vehicle users want more technology, but most importantly, they want technology that is intuitive to use in order to create a fun and enjoyable experience. They also desire a space that is significantly different from traditional combustion engine vehicles.
The Smart Cabin seat module is the heart of the EVI concept. It combines the two front seats with an integrated floor console, steer-by-wire input system, Human-Machine Interface (HMI), displays, seatbelts, airbags, and a comfortable HVAC microclimate system. The steer-by-wire system has an integrated display that can be stowed away during autonomous driving and moved to a steering position for driving functions depending on the chosen driving mode. Additionally, the HMI display interface is fully embedded in the deployable steer-by-wire arm, eliminating the need for any touch interaction with the large display panel in the front of the cabin.
Initial consumer studies using an EVI prototype have shown high acceptance of the novel concept. Participants in the studies specifically appreciated the generous feeling of space and the innovative layout, despite no changes being made to the size or shape of the body of a traditional SUV architecture.
Aside from the improved user experience, the EVI concept also offers benefits for automakers. The integration of all important components in the Smart Cabin seat module simplifies and speeds up the assembly process while also reducing costs, according to Nebout. This is made possible by Yanfeng’s cross-business capabilities, which combine knowledge and experience across all its product categories including electronics, safety systems, seating, and interiors.
The EVI concept also contributes to sustainability. With the elimination of the traditional instrument panel, the overall vehicle weight is reduced by approximately 11 kg, resulting in greater energy efficiency, extended range, and lower CO2 emissions. The use of sustainable materials such as Compression Hybrid Molding (CHyM) with natural fibers further emphasizes Yanfeng’s commitment to sustainability. The modular approach also simplifies dismantling at the end of the vehicle’s life cycle and supports the circular economy.
With the EVI concept, Yanfeng is showcasing its position as an innovative developer of future-focused interior solutions for electrified mobility.
