As summer approaches, carpenters and builders in the UK are preparing for a surge in residential cladding demand. According to research conducted by Sitebuddyz.com, 46% of British homeowners have considered using timber or artificial cladding to enhance the exterior of their properties. Out of these homeowners, 70% plan to undertake cladding projects this year, potentially leading to a cladding facelift for 2 million properties by the end of 2023.
The decision to opt for cladding is driven by several factors, with the top three reasons being the desire to enhance property appeal (48% of homeowners), protect their homes from the weather (40%), and improve energy efficiency by insulating the exterior (39%). The rising energy costs, with a significant surge of 54% in April 2022 and a subsequent 27% increase in October, likely contribute to the growing emphasis on insulation.
The research highlights a strong correlation between age and interest in cladding. Among 18-24 year-old homeowners, 45% already have cladding installed, and 39% express interest in pursuing cladding projects. In contrast, only 6% of homeowners over the age of 55 have implemented cladding, with just 19% considering it.
The top five UK cities with the highest percentage of homeowners interested in cladding their houses are all located in coastal areas exposed to extreme weather conditions and salty air. These cities include Brighton (55%), Belfast (47%), Southampton (41%), Plymouth (39%), and London (32%).
Gareth Lloyd, a carpenter and cladder, comments on the overwhelming demand for cladding, noting that fiber cement boards are particularly popular due to their durability and low maintenance requirements. He emphasizes the energy-saving aspect, stating that adding cladding is like dressing a house with an extra layer of clothing.
James Gibbens, founder of Sitebuddyz, highlights the transformative potential of cladding, offering benefits such as weather protection, improved energy efficiency, and enhanced aesthetics. He anticipates a substantial surge in cladding demand this summer, especially among younger homeowners who seek a modern and stylish look.
The anticipated cladding boom is expected to provide a much-needed boost to the UK construction sector, creating employment opportunities and driving economic growth.
