A major refurbishment project has been announced for the Clifton Suspension Bridge, aimed at conserving its historic ironwork.

Major Refurbishment and Maintenance Project to Begin on Historic Clifton Suspension Bridge

Bristol, UK – The Grade 1 listed Clifton Suspension Bridge, a beloved icon of the city, will undergo a significant programme of refurbishment and maintenance starting in April. The project will focus on protecting the bridge’s historic wrought iron chains, which are 180 years old and originally manufactured for Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Hungerford Footbridge in London.

The engineering firm Taziker has been awarded the multi-million pound contract for the extensive refurbishment project. The goal is to ensure the bridge’s ironwork remains in top condition for at least another 20-25 years. A protective paint system will be used on the chains, as well as the parapet girder latticework and stanchions that run along the outer side of the bridge’s footways.

In addition to the refurbishment, the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust will also install a cutting-edge, environmentally friendly, and sustainable lighting system. This decision comes after an extensive consultation and planning process. The existing lighting will need to be removed to allow for the inspection and repainting of the bridge’s structure.

Trish Johnson, Bridgemaster of the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust, expressed her excitement for the project, stating, “This is a once-in-a-lifetime project that will safeguard important original features designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. We are also updating the bridge’s illuminations to ensure we are reaching the highest standards for sustainability while minimizing light pollution.”

The project is fully funded through the collection of bridge tolls, and the Trust is grateful to bridge users for helping finance these important works. Regular updates will be shared on the Trust’s website and social media platforms to keep interested parties informed about the progress of the project.

Neil Harrison, CEO of Taziker, also shared his enthusiasm for the project, saying, “We are delighted to be awarded such a prestigious project, which will see this outstanding heritage structure continue to be enjoyed by future generations. It is a true testament to our reputation as conservation specialists to be trusted with a landmark that means so much to the public.”
