A majority of German youths view the apprenticeship market favorably as an opportunity.

Results from a survey of German youth conducted by the Bertelsmann Stiftung have shown that 72% of young people view their opportunities on the apprenticeship market as good to very good. However, 26% of those with low school qualifications see their chances of securing an apprenticeship as poor to rather poor.

Clemens Wieland, an expert for professional training at the Bertelsmann Stiftung, commented: “Linking up young people with companies must be done much better. Especially those young people who experience difficulty in finding an apprenticeship vacancy need individual and constant guidance.”

The survey found that only a little more than half of those surveyed see the number of apprenticeships available as adequate. Despite the fact that numerous apprenticeships have not been taken up, more than a quarter of respondents believe that there are too few vacancies.

The survey also revealed that 55% of young people have difficulty finding their way through the information thicket when it comes to selecting the right occupation. Almost a third of those with previous experience in looking for an apprenticeship would like more support.

In 2022, the number of NEETs (Not in Employment, Education or Training) in Germany was estimated at 564,000 young people aged between 15 and 24 years.

The German government passed an apprenticeship guarantee this year in an attempt to improve the situation for young people. However, Wieland noted: “Looking at the core idea of the apprenticeship guarantee – offering young people whose applications have been turned down a guaranteed apprenticeship option – the law is still far behind the Austrian model that served as a role model.”
