Charity A Fundraising Cyclist Embarks on Shetlands Cycle Challenge to Benefit UK Forces’ Mental Health Charity

This June, an intrepid team of four cyclists are embarking on a daring 750 km journey around the Orkney and Shetland islands to raise funds for UK Veterans’ mental health charity, PTSD Resolution. The team is led by 78-year-old ex-Marine Jonathan Thomson, who has already raised an impressive £75,000 through his various cycling challenges.

“Too many of our veterans suffer the evil effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD,” Jonathan says. “This wrecks their lives and deeply affects those of their families and close friends. It is also a major cause of suicide.” Joining Jonathan on the ‘Shetland ’23’ challenge are Jim, a former naval pilot; Matt, a former Royal Marine; and Jez, an ex-Marine and an amputee.

The 7-day route around Orkney and Shetland will include 10 ferry crossings and overnight stays. All funds raised will go directly to PTSD Resolution, as all costs are covered privately by the team. The team have been training for months and are aiming to hit a new fundraising record.

PTSD Resolution CEO, Charles Highett, has wished the ‘Shetland ’23’ team well on their journey: “Jonathan’s various challenges have, to date, facilitated the mental health recovery of 100 UK veterans. His cycling teams display the sort of energy and dedication that enables us to continue in our important work, and we thank them as they train and prepare.”
