London – The Routemaster Association has announced plans to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the very first Routemaster bus, RM1, in 2024. The association will be organizing a special event, known as RM70, at Chiswick Park in London on the weekend of July 20th and 21st to commemorate this significant milestone.
The event will showcase a number of surviving Routemaster buses, which are now mostly in private hands. Visitors will have the opportunity to take free rides on the buses between Chiswick Park and the London Transport Museum in Acton. For photography enthusiasts, the event will also feature a unique photo opportunity with a display of 70 Routemasters.
This is not the first time the Routemaster Association has organized such an event. In 2014, they held RM60 in Finsbury Park, which attracted thousands of visitors. Over 130 Routemasters were present at the event, with some even traveling from Europe to attend.
Chiswick Park was chosen as the location for RM70 due to its historical connection with the Routemaster bus. Before the modern business park was built, the site was home to one of London Transport’s main bus overhaul works. It was also known for its impressive skid pan, where trainee drivers were tested.
The event has been distributed by https://pressat.co.uk/, a leading news distribution service, and is expected to draw in large crowds of both Routemaster enthusiasts and curious members of the public. With its rich history and iconic status, the Routemaster bus continues to hold a special place in the hearts of many.
