The Africa Health Organisation (AHO) has issued an urgent plea for support to combat the ongoing cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe. As of 29 October 2023, the country has recorded a total of 5,964 suspected cases of cholera, with 1,055 cases confirmed and 43 confirmed deaths. With the outbreak having spread across 43 districts, 102 individuals remain hospitalized.
The AHO is working alongside the Zimbabwean government to provide technical assistance and supplies, including water purification tablets and oral rehydration salts. In addition, the organization is encouraging people to practice frequent handwashing, safe food consumption, safe water consumption, and good hygiene practices.
The AHO has also launched an awareness campaign to educate citizens about the importance of preventive measures, and to recognize early symptoms of cholera. The organization is actively engaging communities, leveraging partnerships and networks to garner support, and gathering financial resources and essential supplies.
