New research indicates that 69% of American pet parents are nose blind.

A new survey has revealed that 69% of American pet owners believe they may be “nose blind” to their pet’s true smell. The survey, commissioned by Sunstar QAIS, an indoor air quality brand, asked 2,000 pet owners nationwide and found that 66% agreed they may be unable to detect their pet’s smell in their home.

The research also discovered that 79% of pet owners admit their house has a pet smell and 47% have been told by others that their house or apartment smells like their pet’s pee pad or litter box. Cat owners (57%) were more likely to have been told this than dog owners (42%).

When asked how they felt about being told their pet smells, 44% said they were embarrassed, 42% responded that it was a natural pet smell, 34% said they felt personally insulted, and 20% defended their pet and said they didn’t smell.

The survey also revealed that 28% of cat and 24% of dog owners admitted they do not change or clean out their pets as often as they should, and that 26% of pet owners have been told by a family member that their pet smells. 18% of pet owners were told by friends and 3% by a stranger.

When asked why they don’t change their pet’s litter box or pee pad more often, 23% said they are too busy, 22% said only when it starts to smell, 18% said it was their most hated chore, and 16% said it was a disgusting job.

Takuya Watanabe, spokesperson for Sunstar QAIS, commented: “On average our research revealed that litter boxes or pee pads are changed once every five days, while 3% are only changed every two weeks or more. Also, 30% of pet owners spend less than 30 minutes a week cleaning up their pet poop or pee, but a dedicated 5% spend five hours a week. For those suffering their pet’s smell, a simple solution like the air purifier, QAIS-air-04, would help eliminate pet odors from above the pee pads or cat litter box before they spread, and it is a perfect solution for those with less time as it is filterless and especially designed with pets safety and comfort in mind”.
