The First Serving Mother in the Royal Navy Publishes a Book on Leadership

Sally-Anne Airey, a former Royal Navy Commander and the first woman to continue her service after giving birth, is releasing her first book, Mindful Command, this September. The book, which introduces Airey’s original Mindful Command Leadership Framework, is aimed to simplify the journey for developing real leadership skills.

Having spent 23 years in the Royal Navy, Airey has gained extensive insight in to what makes an effective leader. She believes highly effective leaders express their true selves through their thoughts, words and actions, and are able to remain inwardly directed and outwardly aware, regardless of their surrounding circumstances.

Airey explained: “Many of the leaders whose lives the framework has changed have urged me to write Mindful Command. I’ve made the book as practical and concise as I can, for busy people who want to be better leaders – or who simply want to improve their own personal presence and impact.”

The Mindful Command Leadership Framework has four foundations: Balanced Awareness, Clear Purpose, Fearless Compassion and Inner Stability. Airey states mastering these four aspects helps leaders gain the capacity to always remain their clear, calm and centred self, confident in their decisions.

Brian Garish, President of Mars Veterinary Health International, commented: “The best leaders do not leave their humanity at the office door and Sally-Anne understands this better than most people I know.”

After her career in the Royal Navy, Sally-Anne Airey founded Skilful Leaders, offering coaching to leaders and teams in order to become who they really want to be and do the work they really want to do.

Mindful Command, Airey’s first book, will be published on 28 September 2023 by LID Publishing, available in both paperback and e-book formats.
