The Institute of Brewing & Distilling has been granted chartered status by the Privy Council.

The Institute of Brewing & Distilling (IBD) is celebrating a major milestone in its history, having been granted chartered status. From the 1st of January 2024, the IBD will proudly become the Chartered Institute of Brewers and Distillers.

Chartership is the highest accolade a professional institution can receive and will raise the professional status of its members. It will also help build public trust and confidence in the global drinks industry, and recognise its importance to society and the economy.

To further benefit its members, the IBD will provide a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) pathway. This will ensure that future chartered members maintain their professional credibility through continual acquisition of knowledge and adherence to a professional code of conduct. The IBD believes this will help its members raise their professional profiles and become more marketable in the higher-valued industry.

Tom Shelston, IBD Chief Executive Officer, commented:

“Chartership brings the highest accolade for professionals working within our industry, providing rightful recognition and respect of the science and art of brewing and distilling across the globe.”

Bhavya Mandanna, IBD President, added:

“Achievement of chartered status for the IBD is a historic change of great pride for us all. On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank everyone in our organisation, past and present, who have worked tirelessly to achieve this industry accolade, our industry partners who have been a great support, and our members, for their faith in the IBD.”

The IBD was established in 1886 and has since provided excellence in technical education for professional brewers, distillers and associated suppliers. Over 100,000 industry professionals have received their technical education with the IBD, and it has more than 3,000 members across 90 countries.
