The local legal community in Southampton has come together to offer their support to free frontline legal advice services.

The London Legal Support Trust (LLST) is thrilled to announce the return of the Southampton Legal Walk on Wednesday 20 September. The 10km sponsored walk brings together lawyers, barristers, local legal advice agencies and students to raise awareness and funds for the free legal advice sector.

The High Sheriff of Hampshire, Amelia Riviere, will be leading this year’s walk, with teams and individuals expected to arrive from 4:30pm for a 5pm start at the Combined Courts. The route will finish at College Chambers, with a drinks reception at the end.

Last year, the Southampton Legal Walk raised close to £12,000 with 175 walkers taking part. These funds are essential for helping the most vulnerable people in the county access free legal advice during times of crisis. Among the advice agencies receiving donations are Citizens Advice Isle of Wight, Citizens Advice Winchester and Citizens Advice Test Valley.

Bob Nightingale MBE, Head of Fundraising and founder of LLST, commented: “Free legal advice is a fundamental human right, and the incredible advice agencies that this event supports are increasingly in demand. We are looking forward to walking shoulder to shoulder in Southampton.”

Citizens Advice Test Valley added: “The cost of living crisis means our services are even more in demand and any extra funding available to help offer our service is vital in an ever-changing environment.”

LLST was set up in 2003 to help law centres, Citizen’s Advice Centres and other legal advice agencies to raise unrestricted funding that is vital to their survival. LLST supports over 120 organisations across London and the South East. In 2022, LLST raised over £2 million, with a large proportion of this coming from the London Legal Walk, which raised £720,000.

There is still time to register a team or as an individual for the Southampton Legal Walk. The registration process is easy and the LLST events team will create a fundraising page and provide all the necessary tips to help raise funds for this important cause.

Katie Isherwood, LLST’s Events Manager, said: “Now more than ever we need to support the free legal advice sector and the communities they serve. We encourage everyone to come together and join the Southampton Legal Walk to help raise vital funds for local advice agencies.”
