The Nantwen Chamber Music Festival will host a world premiere of a string quintet.

Renowned Welsh composer John Metcalf’s new String Quintet is set to receive its world premiere performance at Nantwen’s annual Chamber Music Festival. The intimate venue in North Pembrokeshire will host the exclusive performance, which will be accompanied by a repertoire of classical works from Haydn, Brahms, Schubert, Dvorák, and Gliére.

The performance has been orchestrated by the musicians’ group at Nantwen – Tonau – with the support of Ty Cerdd, an organization that actively promotes the music of Wales. Cellist Daniel Davies, one of the performers, said: “I am delighted to be able to welcome such fine players to Nantwen to perform a new work by John Metcalf. When I performed his piece Ynys Las for cello and piano, I was immediately captivated by the lyricism of his music and how the landscape of Wales is imbued within it.”

The concerts on 1st and 2nd July 2023 will include The Hunt String Quartet by Haydn, Brahms’ Völkslieder, 3 pieces from Last Leaf by the Danish String Quartet, Schubert’s String Quintet, and 8 pieces for violin and cello by Gliére. To add to the unique atmosphere of the venue, afternoon tea and cake will be available in the wildlife-friendly gardens.

Music at Nantwen was established in 2015 by Daniel Davies and his wife Jemma. The venue is self-sustaining and designed to leave audiences feeling enriched, as well as being an environmentally sensitive place. It hosts numerous courses for musicians throughout the year, attracting amateur string players from around the world.
