Sport England have announced a significant investment of £250 million into local communities across England to promote physical activity and combat inequality.
Research from Sport England revealed the most active place in England had 81% physical activity levels compared to the least active place which had 43%. It also highlighted that people living in poorer neighbourhoods were twice as likely to have a disability or health condition.
The Place Partners programme is being expanded with up to £190 million of National Lottery and Exchequer funding being invested in up to 80-100 new places across England.
Ali Oliver MBE, Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Sport Trust, said: “We welcome Sport England’s expansion of their place-based Place Partners programme. It is crucial that we take steps to close the gaps in participation created by inequality.”
Oliver continued: “Providing a core entitlement to all young people regardless of affluence or background will reduce the risk of increasing inequality, while place-based investment will respond to community specific issues and challenges.”
