The Institute of Brewing and Distilling Introduces New Gin Production Course

The Institute of Brewing and Distilling Launches New Gin Production Course for Distillers

The Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD), a leading provider of technical education in the distilling industry, has announced the launch of a new self-assessed and on-demand technical course on Gin Production. This course aims to equip distillers with the knowledge and techniques necessary to produce exceptional gin.

The Gin Production course is the latest addition to the IBD’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) short courses for distillers. It is designed for distillers working in distilleries of all sizes who want to consistently produce high-quality gin at a minimal cost.

The course covers essential knowledge and best practices for gin production on a commercial scale. It includes key information on gin botanicals and neutral spirit, as well as an in-depth review of gin flavor, methods, and technologies for optimization in the distillery. Participants will also learn how to assess and analyze gin and its ingredients.

Developed in collaboration with leading distillers and spirits experts, the course features contributions from Kirsty Black, Master Distiller at Arbikie Distillery; Chris Hepple, Head of Operations at Hepple Spirits Company; Meeghan Murdock, Distiller and Spirits Consultant; Hugh Holds, Distiller, Sensory Scientist, and PhD Student; Renaldo Fourie, Master Distiller at DGB(Pty) Ltd.; and Abhishek Banik, Head Distiller at Copper Rivet Distillery.

The Gin Production course maintains the same technical excellence found in all IBD qualifications, without the need for a formal exam. It also provides participants with a downloadable PDF containing technical information such as key points of the course, descriptors of important gin and botanical flavor compounds, key calculations for gin production, an overview of stills and still operation, and guidance on structured gin recipe development.

The course features a variety of learning materials, including text, videos, animations, quizzes, and online games. Participants who complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Stuart Howe, Technical and Development Manager at the IBD, commented on the launch of the new course, stating, “This is the world’s first course providing in-depth scientific and technical information specifically about gin production. It is written in collaboration with experts in the field and with the technical rigor and accuracy that you expect from the IBD. If you want to optimize your gin production process or add a brilliant gin to your product portfolio, then this is the course for you!”

The IBD was originally established as The Laboratory Club in 1886 with a mission to provide excellence in technical education for professional brewers and distillers and associated suppliers. With four levels of globally recognized qualifications, the IBD caters to all types of professionals with a passion for brewing and distilling. Over 100,000 industry professionals have received their technical education from the IBD, making it a global institution with more than 3,000 members across 99 countries.
