On Tuesday 8 August 2023, the #Willdoes and Cancare charities are jointly launching a search for a star singer/songwriter. The winner of the online talent contest will be given the opportunity to perform on the same mainstage as UK band Toploader at Dorset’s Music by the Sea Festival.
Toploader frontman Joe Washburn expressed his enthusiasm to be the headline act at the festival, saying that he “can’t wait” to help raise awareness and funds for the two charities. Washburn is also excited to hear the winner of the competition who will not only perform on stage, but also meet Toploader, take a photo with the band and watch from backstage.
The band, originally formed in 1997, have had several Top 20 hits and have performed at major events, including the FIFA World Cup Final in Qatar in 2022. The festival is expected to draw in a crowd of around 2,000 people, making it the largest ever.
The winner will also be performing on the same stage as local Indie rock band Galaxy Thief, whose hit single ‘Timewaster’ has been streamed over a million times on Spotify and YouTube since its release last year.
The festival is in memory of Henry Searle and William Paddy, two young boys who tragically passed away. Lesley Paddy, founder of #Willdoes and mum of Will, and Vicki Searles, mum of Henry, said: “Both charities are thrilled to have such a prestigious band headline at the festival and support such great causes. We’re also really keen to support upcoming talent. It’s such an incredible opportunity for someone to become famous!”
To enter the competition, solo/duo artists must submit a 30-second audition video to the Facebook event page or email info@willdoes.co.uk by midday on August 26th 2023.
Tickets for the Music by the Sea Festival, which takes place at Prince Albert Gardens Swanage from 11am to 9pm on September 2nd 2023, cost £15 for adults in the postcode BH19/20 and £20 for all other adults. Children under 14 are free.

Music by the Sea Festival is a joint initiative of #Willdoes and Cancare, two charities dedicated to supporting the wellbeing of young people in Dorset and the surrounding areas. #Willdoes is in memory of William Paddy, while Cancare was set up in memory of Henry Searle, who was diagnosed with brain cancer at 19 and died aged 25 after a long battle.
